man convicted in fatal oakland restaurant shooting

Last week in Oakland, a man was convicted in the murder and assault for fatally shooting a UC Berkeley student and wounding two other men at a Korean restaurant in March 2009: Conviction in 'mean-mugging' murder of UC student.

22-year-old Dwayne Robinson was convicted of second-degree murder, a weapons enhancement and three counts of assault with a firearm, and now faces at least 40 years in prison for killing 22-year-old Vincent Choi and assaulting Michael Voong and John Lu:
Robinson, who was a student at Chabot College in Hayward, was with a group of friends and was packing a 9mm semiautomatic handgun, said Tim Wagstaffe, Alameda County deputy district attorney.

Robinson and his friends got into an argument with Choi and his group. "It was just basically about people just kind of staring each other down, just mean-mugging each other," Wagstaffe said.

Both groups went outside the restaurant, and Robinson pulled the gun and fired seven shots, hitting Choi twice in the chest and two of his friends in the legs, Wagstaffe said. Robinson then fled in a car driven by a friend, but not before firing five more shots that did not hit anyone.

Robinson was tracked down through tips to the police, and witnesses at the restaurant provided investigators with cell-phone pictures of him, authorities said.
According to the prosecutor, the whole thing started as a stupid stare-down that escalated into a night of violence. I can't think of a more dumbass reason to pull a gun on someone. More here: Hayward man convicted of fatally shooting former UC Berkeley senior.
