Angry Reader of the Week: Jenny Ton

What's up, good people? It is time again to meet the Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is Jenny Ton.

Who are you?

Jenny Ton. The one, out of the 11 Jenny’s you know, that will happily finish your plate for you and will proudly pack the last wing to go.

I’ve been known as "Jenny Weighs A Ton," "Jen-Dog," "JT" or "Bottomless Pit Of A Stomach." Of the four, I think the last one is a bit too long.

I’m also the Co-Founder & Creative Director of Retrofit Republic -a socially responsible styling firm and vintage clothing retailer in San Francisco. It’s the love child of our passion for fashion and social and environmental justice.

What are you?

I’m a proud daughter of very resourceful Vietnamese and Chinese immigrants. A risk taker that truly believes the possibilities are endless and attainable. Having very little forced my family and myself to be creative with the little we had and that often required taking risks including, but not limited to, covering a sizeable hole in the wall of my parent’s house with white rice, recycled paper, elmers glue, and plenty of white out. Till this day, they have yet to discover it.

I’m a very lucky optimist living my dream.

A feminist and activist fortunate to build with a supportive and loving community of fearless trailblazers making real impact.

A Taurini (Taurus & Gemini). I’d like to think I get the best attributes of both signs; the industrious Type A Taurus that gets things done as well as the creative, fun, and adventurous spirit of the Type B Gemini. They aren’t mutually exclusive after all!

Where are you?

I’m at the Retrofit Republic headquarters in the Lower Haight of San Francisco. For your own well-being, don’t call it Frisco.

Where are you from?

Baldwin Park, CA. Where the first In-N-Out, In-N-Out University, and the fancy In-N-Out gas station are located! No joke! I’m considering their master's program in The Secret Menu. Then I’d really be the most popular adult on the block!

What do you do?

I try my best to do things for the greater good such as building the plane as we fly it. Don’t worry. It eventually figures itself out.

And

Shameless plugs!

Awe, instant heart cred for you. Thank you for supporting a socially responsible and women of color run small business! Did you know we donate part of our profits and services back to the community? If not, it’s your lucky day! More heart cred for you!

What are you all about?

Working hard. Playing harder. Eating the hardest.

I work hard for the ideologies, values, and causes I believe in and the people I love such as social and environmental justice, women’s rights, organizations passionate about making a positive impact e.g., NAPAWF, fashion, socially responsible business practices, friends, family, and community. We are only as strong as our communities.

I play harder with the people I love. What’s the point of working hard if you’re not going to share the fruits of your labor with your loved ones? At the end of the day, there’s nothing like witnessing the happiness of your community and that, often times, comes from the experiences and memories shared with them. I never take quality time with my loved ones for granted. It’s the pho to my Bottomless Pit Of A Stomach.

I eat the hardest.

What makes you angry?

If you know me, you know I’m rarely angry unless it’s because of the usual suspects: racism, misogyny, patriarchy, sexism, yellow fever (nope, a thermometer won’t help you), and arrogance. I don’t care who you think you are. Key word is "think."

And I don’t have a problem calling you out on any of the aforementioned.
