it's all connected

Tonight's the premiere of the fifth and final season of the greatest show in the history of television, HBO's The Wire.

I'll admit, I was a latecomer to this show, having watched the entirety of the previous seasons on DVD over the last three months. To hardcore fans, it may seem like I'm jumping on the bandwagon. But dammit, I am now obsessed.

The Wire deals with the mean streets of Baltimore's drug trade, and the police who constantly find themselves fighting a losing battle. But it should not be mistaken for your average cop show. It's truly unlike anything on television. The show is downright epic, weaving together a complex web of characters and storylines addressing the political, economic and social realities of an American city in decay.

Aside from the fact that is a fantastic show, and deserves to be seen by everyone out there, I bring it up here because of one of the show's characters, Detective Shakima "Kima" Greggs, played by Korean American actress Sonja Sohn.

I have a lot of favorite characters on the show, but Kima holds a special place in my heart as The Wire's lone Asian American face. Anyway, if you haven't checked out The Wire, do so.
