Sung J. Woo has a really great essay in the
New York Times about the ever evolving ritual of grocery shopping, started many yars ago, with his Korean immigrant family:
Not Just a Place for Food, but for Bonding.
If you like this piece, you might want to consider picking up Sung's first novel,
Everything Asian, when it's published this April from Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin's Press. It's about a young Korean immigrant and his family as they adjust to life in suburban New Jersey.
I actually received an advance copy of
Everything Asian a little while back, but I have to admit, it's been sitting in a large, growing stack of books I've been meaning to read. Now I'm really looking forward to reading it.
