This week, Asian American basketball fans in the Bay Area came out in full force to support and witness the awesomeness of hometown hero Jeremy Lin, who hails from Palo Alto, playing for Harvard against Santa Clara Unversity: Lin's Asian-American fans have arrived.
Sounds like it was quite a night, with a capacity crowd filling Santa Clara's 4,700-seat Leavey Center to see the 6-foot-3 senior, who is averaging 17.4 points per game for the 11-3 Crimson. He is, by all measures, a bonafide, stereotype-shattering Asian American college basketball star.
The Dream League, a Bay Area community service organization dedicated to the advancement of Asian American basketball players, purchased about 500 tickets from Santa Clara and offered to resell them at lower prices in order to encourage members of the Asian American community to watch Lin play.
I guess word got out -- about the game and about Jeremy Lin. As the article notes, he's definitely no longer college basketball's best-kept secret. It's the Jeremy Lin Show, and more and more people are tuning in.
Alas, Santa Clara's defense was determined to limit the scoring to Lin's teammates -- he tied a season low with six points. But he put up 9 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks in Harvard's 74-66 win.
No matter what happened on the court, you can't deny that it's pretty awesome to see this kind of excitement over an Asian American college basketball player. I can't wait to see what happens next.
