vincent chin 30: standing up then and now, june 23

This month marks the 30th anniversary of Vincent Chin's murder. Thirty years later, in light of the national conversation on bullying, the hazing and subsequent death of Pvt. Danny Chen, the continuing effects of 9/11 and growing rhetoric over anxieties about China's economic growth, the issues around Vincent Chin's case seem more relevant than ever.

On Saturday, June 23, join Asian Pacific Americans for Progress, with over twenty national and local partners, for Vincent Chin 30: Standing Up Then and Now, a nationwide Google Hangout to discuss bullying and hate crimes.

Panelist will include Congressmember Judy Chu, Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus; Council on American-Islamic Relations-SF Executive Director Zahra Billoo; OCA Executive Director Tom Hayashi; Asian American Justice Center President and Executive Director Mee Moua and more. I'll have the privilege of serving as moderator.

On June 23, 1982, Vincent Chin lost his life as the victim of an anti-Asian hate crime murder in Detroit. Thirty years later, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders continue to face discrimination and bullying. In light of recent tragedies like the extreme hazing and subsequent death of Pvt. Danny Chen and the continuing effects of 9/11, what can Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders do to stand up against racism and discrimination?

More viewing locations are still being announced, so be sure to check the Asian Pacific Americans for Progress website here for further updates.

Want to get involved? Volunteer to serve on a local planning committee, get your organization to co-sponsor a viewing near you, or if you city doesn't have an event planned yet, organize one. And be sure to spread the word to all your friends, family and fellow activists.

If you'd like to join or host a party, contact apafp@apaforprogress.org. Your party can be as few as ten people or as many as 200. All you need is a location with a good internet connection, a screen and comfortable seating.

Lastly, Blacklava is commemorating the event with a special Vincent Chin VC30 T-shirt. Get one and wear it -- it's a great conversation starter.
