Whether you are a freelancer, a blogger or just someone who likes complaining about the movie on the way out of the theater, we are all “critics” in search of an outlet. This three-session course considers some of the pressing questions facing cultural journalists today from the philosophical (the changing meaning of “taste” and criticism, the rules for reviewing, the personal essay in a confessional age) to the practical (voice and clarity; strategies for pitching magazines and websites; the editing process; writing for an ever-changing digital medium). Grantland’s Hua Hsu will lead discussions of assigned readings, administer weekly writing assignments, and offer critical feedback to increase the readability of your work.
Students are invited to bring up to ten pages of writing--excerpts from a longer piece, an assortment of clips, whatever--to the first meeting.

Fee: $150 General/$100 Members
