Angry Reader of the Week: Sylvie Kim

Heyyyy everybody! Time to meet the Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is Sylvie Kim.

Who are you?
I'm Sylvie. Food service workers often call me "Slivy" or "Steve."

What are you?
Ethnically: Korean. Politically: Progressive. Socially: Awkward, with occasional high-functioning moments.

Where are you?
At home in Oakland. Half of me wants to tell you how great Oakland is and half of me doesn't want you to move here and drive prices up even more.

Where are you from?
I was born in Southern California but raised in Ohio. Coulda been worse.

What do you do?
I work in tech as a content writer. I also freelance for SF Weekly's The Exhibitionist blog and I'm a contributing editor at Hyphen magazine. I majored in English and got a grad degree Asian American Studies so just by being employed, I've shattered most people's expectations. I don't have too many regrets about those choices. You wouldn't want me performing your root canal or doing your taxes anyway.

What are you all about?
I'm in my 30s now, so I'm all about acceptance and taking flaws and failures in stride. I don't know why everyone fears 30, it's such a chill decade.

What makes you angry?
It's an ever-evolving list since I'm gradually morphing into a cranky old woman. Lately, Steubenville has made me angry. In general, Asian Americans calling each other "sell outs" makes me angry. People dismissing the significance of media representation makes me angry. The comments section of any article on immigration, race, class, gender or sexuality makes me angry, then sad, and then I get angry at myself for not being able to resist reading the comments section in the first place.
