Internship Opportunity: Fall Openings at MinKwon Center for Community Action

Internships, yo. The MinKwon Center for Community Action works to meet the needs and concerns of the Korean American community of New York City and Asian American community of Flushing, Queens through various grassroots organizing, education, and advocacy initiatives.

The organization places a special emphasis on meeting the needs of marginalized community members who have less access to resources, including the youth, the elderly, recent immigrants, low-income residents, and limited English proficient residents.

The MinKwon Center has announced five fall internship openings in the following areas:

The MinKwon Center's community organizing work seeks to engage Korean
Americans in the Queens area to work on issues around immigration, housing
and labor. The internship responsibilities include assisting the community
organizer in relationship-building with community members, participate in
community outreach efforts and engage in advocacy efforts in coalition with
other organization and groups.

Civic Participation Intern

The MinKwon Center's Civic Participation Program, established in 1990,
plays a critical role in building a strong base of empowered Korean
American and immigrant community members in New York City by mobilizing the
community towards active and engaged civic participation. The internship
responsibilities include assisting our Voter Empowerment program through
voter registration and voter research, helping plan, coordinate, and
facilitating educational activities, and taking part in civic participation
campaigns such as door-knocking, mailings and educational events.

Chinese Community Intern

New York City in areas such as public benefits, labor rights, immigration
law, housing, and financial independence. The intern will engage in direct
contact with Chinese-speaking clients through initial intakes, assessment
of client cases, and direct assistance; preparing and conducting
educational workshops; and coordinating street and media outreach
activities.

Development Intern

The Development Intern will work with the Development Coordinator to
support the MinKwon Center's development and fundraising efforts. The
intern's activities will include: performing research on prospective
funders; preparing funding proposals, letters of inquiry, and grant
reports; and providing support for fundraising events and initiatives.

Public Benefits Intern

One branch of the MinKwon Center's Social Services Program focuses on
empowering the low-income, immigrant community members to access various
government public benefits. The Financial Legal Counselor specifically
screens for eligibility and assists in the application of Food Stamps, Home
Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), and Bank Accounts. Under the direct
supervision of the Financial Legal Counselor, the intern will advise and
counsel Korean clients, prepare applications, conduct legal/or non-legal
research on policy issues, and manage the client database.
