Two men charged in fatal attack on UNC professor

In North Carolina, two men have been arrested and charged with first degree murder and armed robbery in the fatal attack on a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

59-year-old Feng Liu, a research professor in the Eshelman School of Pharmacy at UNC, was walking near campus Wednesday afternoon when he was robbed and beaten by two suspects. Liu was struck in the head with a landscaping stone and died at the hospital the next day.

23-year-old Derick Davis II and 27-year-old Troy Arrington Jr. were arrested and charged in the attack.

A vigil for murdered UNC professor Feng Liu will be held on UNC's campus, one week after Liu was robbed and beaten to death near the intersection of West University Drive and Ransom Street.

The vigil, sponsored by the Chinese-American Friendship Association, is planned for 7:30pm Wednesday at the FedEx Global Communication Center at 201 Pittsboro Street.

A memorial service for Liu will be held on Saturday at 4pm at UNC's Memorial Hall.

The 59-year-old was hit in the head with a landscaping stone and robbed during a walk near campus on July 22.

Derick Davis and Troy Arrington Jr. are charged with first degree murder.

Liu has been a researcher and professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy since 2005.

This week, the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy announced the establishment of the Feng Liu Graduate Student Award Fund in honor of their fallen colleague. Donations to the fund can be made online.
