'Big Hero 6' TV series in the works

Marvel/Disney's animated superhero squad will make the leap to Disney XD in 2017.

Cool news for fans of Big Hero 6. We will indeed get to see the further adventures of the animated Marvel/Disney superhero squad, but it won't be in a feature film sequel. Big Hero 6 is making a heroic leap to the small screen as an animated TV series, set to premiere on Disney XD sometime in 2017.

Big Hero 6 animated TV series zooms to Disney XD for 2017

The series will pick up right where the hit 2014 movie left off, following the further adventures of teen tech genius Hiro Hamada, his loyal cuddly robot Baymax, and rest of the Big Hero 6 team. Now something of a legend at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, Hiro and the crew will face new villains and challenges:

The series picks up immediately following the events in the movie, and continues the adventures of 14-year-old tech genius Hiro and his robot Baymax. Joining the pair on their journey is control freak Wasabi, scientist Honey Lemon, fanboy Fred and no-nonsense Go Go, who together form the Big Hero 6 superhero team. As the new prodigy at San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, Hiro faces daunting academic challenges, not to mention the social trials of being the little man on campus. The stakes are also raised for the high-tech heroes when they must protect their city from an array of scientifically enhanced villains.

As much as I was looking forward to a movie sequel, a Big Hero 6 television series makes all kinds of sense. And I don't see why that can't leave the window open for more super-sized Big Hero 6 feature film adventures.

The Big Hero 6 series will be executive produced by Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley, who created Disney Channel's hit 2002 adventure series Kim Possible. The show has started production for a 2017 premiere.

No word if any of the original Big Hero 6 voice cast members will reprise their roles for the TV series, but I'm betting at least a few will be back. Ryan Potter, the voice of Hiro, seems to know something:
