Angry Reader of the Week: Yola Lu

"I like to try to include as much honesty in my comedy as possible."

Hello, good people of the internet. It's that time again. It is time to meet the Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is Yola Lu.

Who are you?

I'm Yola Lu -- a stand up comedian, sketch writer and performer, improviser and producer.

What are you?

The daughter of two Taiwanese immigrants, someone trying to maintain a professional career while hustling comedy, and a co-founder of Disoriented Comedy.

Where are you?

Austin, TX

Where are you from?

Originally born in Los Angeles and moved to Washington when I was 4 (city was pretty rough for a toddler trying to make it).

What do you do?

I work as a PM for my day job, and I perform stand up around town and produce a monthly show called the Brixton Comedy Hour. I am also a writer and cast member of a local sketch troupe, Pendulum.

What are you all about?

I like to try to include as much honesty in my comedy as possible. Almost all of my jokes are based on real experiences. When I first started standup, I wrote a lot of observational jokes that people would tell me they've heard a similar premise before -- which drove me to write about my real life experiences and upbringing instead. I am also obsessed with producing good comedy shows. I think a lot about the following -- do I have a line up that is diverse enough? Will the audience like the comics? Is the audience engaged enough so the comics feel like the show was worth it?

What makes you angry?

The idea of the "model minority" and the expectations Asian Americans are held to, the stigma of depression, Asian beauty standards, and people who use hashtags in text messages -- it's like, you don't get it.
