Indiana University Student Stabbed in Anti-Asian Attack

The suspect said she stabbed the victim because it "would be one less person to blow up our country."



It would be nice to not live in fear of literally being stabbed in the head for being Asian.

In Bloomington, Indiana, a woman has been charged after an 18-year-old Indiana University student repeatedly was stabbed in the head on a public bus in an anti-Asian attack. The suspect told police she stabbed the victim because the victim was "Chinese," adding that it "would be one less person to blow up our country."

The victim told investigators she was standing and waiting for the exit doors to open on a Bloomington Transit bus Wednesday afternoon when another passenger began striking her in the head multiple times with a folding knife. Surveillance footage showed that the suspect and the victim had no interaction leading up to the assault.

56-year-old Billie R. Davis has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery. According to NPR, Davis has not been charged with a hate crime because Indiana is one of four states that lack a comprehensive law. So this is, officially, just a regular head stabbing attack -- not a hate-motivated head stabbing attack.

Indiana man arrested in hatchet attack on Chinese student

Self-proclaimed white supremacist Dana Ericson said he was trying to "perpetrate ethnic cleansing."



Last week in Nashville, Indiana, a man was arrested after attacking a Chinese high school student with a hatchet, injuring her in the back. The man later told police that he was trying to "perpetrate ethnic cleansing."

On Thursday afternoon, 18-year-old Yue Zhang was taking photos with her class downtown when a man approached her, said, "I'm going to kill you," and struck her twice in the back with a hatchet.

The teen, an exchange student from China, suffered a substantial two-inch laceration in her back. Thankfully, the injury wasn't life-threatening, but doctors estimate the hatchet came just an inch from the victim's spine. Her thick coat apparently prevented the injury from being fatal.

59-year-old Dana Ericson was arrested on several charges, including attempted murder, aggravated battery causing serious permanent disfigurement and battery by means of a deadly weapon.

Tragic news out of Indiana... Last week in Bloomington, an Indiana University student was found dead in her apartment, apparently stabbed by her boyfriend who then killed himself in a murder-suicide.

21-year-old Yaolin Wang, a junior at Indiana University, was found dead from apparent stab wounds last Wednesday. Police suspect her boyfriend, 20-year-old Chuanlin Xiao, killed her before hanging himself. They had been in a relationship for about six months and lived together in the apartment building.

Just days after Wang's murder, another IU student was found dead in a separate incident. 20-year-old Joseph Smedley II was found dead in an apparent drowning. Hundreds gathered on Indiana University's campus Wednesday night for a vigil to pay tribute to Wang Smedley.

The Real Yi-Fen Chou is Not Okay with Your Fake Poetry Name

Poet Michael Derrick Hudson went to the same high school as Yi-Fen Chou in Fort Wayne, Indiana.



So now we all know about the pseudonymic deception of white guy poet Michael Derrick Hudson, who couldn't get his work published under his own regular-ass name, so he used a Chinese pen name, "Yi-Fen Chou," and got a poem placed in the prestigious Best American Poems anthology. Controversy ensues.

Now it turns out that fake Chinese name was borrowed from a real person -- who is not okay with it.

It looks like Michael Derrick Hudson didn't just make up his now-infamous wong de plume out of thin air. The family of a woman actually named Yi-Fen Chou, who apparently attended the same high school as Hudson in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has stepped forward, demanding that he cease using the name immediately.

The Most Racist Laundromat in America?

I came across this a while ago, but a good reader sent it in and reminded me about it... a racist, old school blast from the past that is unfortunately still very much in the present. This article examines the "U-Washee" laundromat in Richmond, Indiana -- an establishment completely built on racist Chinese stereotypes:

This is an actual working laundromat decorated with signs featuring all sorts racist yellow-skinned chinaman caricatures, wonton fonts and faux ching chong grammar... and no one really seems to give a damn. Zero outrage. The article seems to suggest that it's an Indiana thing.

Ridiculous, right? You too can wash and dry your clothes amidst the sight of smiling slanted-eyed racist themes. Does the decor actually figure in with the laundromat's business strategy? Do people feel more comfortable cleaning their clothes with pictures of Chinese laundrymen around -- offensive or otherwise? That's racist!

The author of the piece points out that his intention is not to demand or threaten the owner of U-Washee, but to speak up and break the cycle of complacency and help the business move past the anti-Chinese racist stereotypes. I'm curious to know what happened after this was posted last month.
