This event for local kids and community will feature sets by Bob Forrest, Lucky Dragons, Deradoorian and LA Fog, plus a raffle.

Save Music in Chinatown

Sunday, December 8, 2013
2:00 PM to 5:30 PM (PST)

Human Resources
410 Cottage Home St.
Los Angeles, CA 90012

This is the first in a series of fundraising concerts organized to pay for music education at Castelar Elementary School. Established in 1882 and sitting right in the middle of Chinatown, the inner-city campus serves mostly immigrant kids who don't get much exposure to performing arts or creative outlets.

Chinatown has an unbeatable musical past (mostly punk) and rad art scene in the present (post punk). Neither crowd has had very much to do with the residents in Chinatown but we're hoping to create a bridge for both to help out the local kids.

The inaugural bill channels Chinatown's past and present, punk and art, raw and refined:

Bob Forrest sings for Thelonious Monster and The Bicycle Thief with members of the Circle Jerks, Weirdos, and Red Hot Chili Peppers among others, and it wouldn’t be shocking if the famously chatty singer referred to the Hong Kong Cafe and other fixtures of early L.A. punk between songs. Forrest’s recently published autobiography Running with Monsters is actually book-ended by childhood trips to Hop Louie, and his views on the healing power of music are very relevant to the cause as well.

Co-headliners Lucky Dragons perfectly represent the Chinatown of today. The experimental and highly prolific art duo plays, creates, and collaborates in the area, as well as deejays a weekly show from the locally based KCHUNG Internet radio station. Meanwhile, Luke Fischbeck and Sarah Rara’s playful spirit and encouragement of audiences to participate in the musical and creative process make them ideal contributors as well. While the show isn’t catered to kids, the matinee timing makes it conducive to them, and Lucky Dragons can be inspiring to all ages.

LA Fog are a post-punk jazz quartet that plays experimental, acoustic, boogie-woogie ear candy. Human Resources is their home turf.

Special guest Deradoorian is a late addition to the lineup. The ex-Dirty Projector is fresh off the Animal Collective tour and wants to pitch in!

With DJs provided by KCHUNG radio.
Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Get 'em at Eventbrite. For further details about the concert, go to the Facebook event. And seriously, how awesome is the jumping girl on that poster?
