Netflix series wins eight awards, including Outstanding Limited Series, Best Actor and Best Actress.

The Netflix limited series Beef was a big winner at the 75th Emmy Awards on Sunday night, taking home eight trophies including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Lead Actor for Steven Yeun and Lead Actress for Ali Wong. Series creator Lee Sung Jin also took home awards from writing and directing.

Beef is the first show created by and starring Asian Americans to win an Emmy for Outstanding Series. Ali Wong's win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology makes her the first Asian American woman to win an Emmy for a lead role. Steven Yeun's win is only the third Emmy for a Lead Actor of Asian descent.

Darren Criss made history at 70th Emmy Awards, winning Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his portrayal of Andrew Cunanan in FX's The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

By our calculations, Criss is the first Asian American actor to win in this category, only the second actor of Asian descent to win in any acting cateogry, and the first Filipino American actor to win an Emmy. Ever.

Criss received wide acclaim for his haunting star turn as real-life killer Andrew Cunanan (who was Filipino American, like Criss). Season two of the FX true crime anthology series chronicled Cunanan's notorious 1997 murder spree, in which he killed four men before shooting famed fashion designer Gianni Versace in Miami.

"Oh, my God, you guys are witnessing the most extraordinary moment of my life thus far," Criss exclaimed as he took the stage to accept the award.

Well, would you look at that. The 2018 Emmy Awards nominations were announced this morning. Among the surprises and snubs, something historic: Sandra Oh's lead actress nomination for Killing Eve. The nod makes Oh the first actress of Asian descent to be nominated for an Emmy for lead actress in a drama series.

Oh stars in the critically acclaimed BBC America spy thriller as Eve Polastri, a MI5 officer who is pusuing a wily assassin played by Jodie Comer. While their fierce cat-and-mouse chase plays out across Europe, both women slowly become obsessed with one another. It's a brilliant show, and Oh is pitch perfect in the kind of lead role she should have been playing years ago. She deserves the nomination. Hell, she should win.

The 46-year-old Korean Canadian happened to be with fellow Asian (American) actor Michelle Krusiec when she got the news of her Emmy nomination. They had been discussing Hansol Jung's play Wild Goose Dreams when Oh finally glanced at her phone and realized it had been blowing up on silent.

"I really love the fact that when all those calls were going off, my phone was on silent," Oh tells Vulture, "[because] Michelle and I were talking about this play about a North Korean refugee."

Other notable winners include Lena Waithe and Aziz Ansari for 'Master of None.'



On Sunday at the 69th annual Emmy Awards, Riz Ahmed won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his starring role as an accused murderer in HBO's limited series crime drama The Night Of.

That makes Ahmed the first man of Asian descent to take home a trophy at the Emmys, and only the second Asian performer ever to win, following Archie Panjabi's win for The Good Wife in 2010.

The Night Of is an eight-part miniseries that follows the intricate story of a murder case in New York City. Ahmed received critical praise for his star-making turn as Nasir "Naz" Khan, a Pakistani American college student accused in the grisly murder of a mysterious young woman after a night gone wrong.

"Wow. This is a tremendous honor to be recognized along so many actors who I've watched for so long." Ahmed said in his acceptance speech. "If this show has shone a light on some of the prejudice in our society, Islamophobia, some of the injustice in our justice system, then maybe that's something."

The Pakistani British actor and emcee also specifically credited the organizations South Asian Youth Action and The Innocence Project for helping him prepare for the role.

Nominations for 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards, recognizing excellence in the television industry, were announced on Thursday morning. In a banner year for diversity on television, Aziz Ansari receive a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Master of None.

Ansari's nomination makes him the first Asian American lead series actor to be nominated for an Emmy. He joins a competitive field that includes previous nominees Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent), Anthony Anderson (black-ish), Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth) and William H. Macy (Shameless).

Well, the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards were presented on Monday night, and somewhere in between Sofia Vergara being summarily objectified and Breaking Bad winning, it was the usual mostly white affair.

But big congratulations to Cary Joji Fukunaga, who won the Emmy for Outstanding Director for a Drama Series for his work on HBO's True Detective. If you've seen the show, you have to admit it's one hell of an accomplishment, considering that Fukunaga directed all eight episodes of the acclaimed cable crime drama's first season. It's basically an eight-hour-long movie.

Mr. Fukunaga also instantly earned himself a legion of fans during the Emmy broadcast, with Twitter users collectively swooning and fanning themselves over his suddenly-realized panty-exploding hotness. With the help of those party-in-the-back man-braids, the red-hot filmmaker cleaned up quite nicely.
