Finally, a webseries about that 'Nonprofit' hustle

"...insightful, hilarious, and occasionally heartbreaking glimpse into activism, social justice, and nonprofit life."

Here's a fun-looking project that could use your crowd-funding support. Created by Luann Algoso, Nonprofit is a webseries that follows Gabby, "a spunky, idealistic Filipina organizer as she navigates relationships, friendship, family, and the realities of activism in and out of nonprofit." It's a story about finding love, searching for fulfillment in work, and navigating our life purpose.

If you recognize the ups and downs of the nonprofit hustle, this series is for you.

25-year-old Gabby Antonio just started as a community organizer at APIISA (Asian Pacific Islanders in Solidarity Alliance) a social justice nonprofit in Portland. The pilot follows Gabby as she stumbles through the planning of her first major community event, while also dealing with an incompetent boss, white savior canvassers, and all while managing her panic attacks through use of her favorite hot pink vibrator.

Here's a preview:

Dawen's West Coast Tour

One of our favorite musicians returns stateside to open for Canadan artist Wanting

Our old friend Dawen, one of the smoothest singers I know, has been holding it down in Taiwan and is pretty much on his way to becoming a full-fledged pop star. No joke, he's making music videos in the rain and performing on TV and playing to screaming fans in arenas and stuff. Our boy Dawen!

But before we completely lose him to the pop stratosphere, he's returning to the United States this month for a four-city West Coast Tour, opening for Canadian artist Wanting. The tour kicks off next week at the House of Blues in Los Angeles:

Portland man attacked while trying to help the homeless

Assailant punched him in the face and tried to pull him out of his car

Damn. You try to do some good on the streets, and you find yourself getting punched in the face... Over the weekend in Portland, a guy says he was attacked while trying to help the homeless.

Man attacked while trying to help homeless

Tommy Ly and his friends brought food and warm clothes to hand out at a homeless camp under the Morrison Bridge on Saturday night. But at some point in the evening, Ly was attacked while waiting in his car.

According to Ly, a man approached the car, opened the driver's side door and started punching him in the face. Then the assailant tried to drag Ly out of his seat in an apparent attempt to steal the car. Fortunately, he was buckled in, and wasn't going out like that -- he was able to drive off and get the hell out of there.

"We Love You Long Time" Billboard in Portland's Chinatown

The Phrase That Refuses to Die, courtesy of KXL-FM.

Hey Portland, for real? This is apparently an actual billboard for talk radio station FM News 101 KXL.

WE LOVE YOU LONG TIME. That's it. You've got to me kidding me. It's no coincidence that it overlooks NW 3rd and Couch -- that's Portland's Old Town Chinatown. Somebody at this radio station thought it would be a good idea to pay money to greet the neighborhood with this pointless, racist phrase -- a phrase that's been plaguing Asian Americans since 1987 (thanks, Full Metal Jacket). A phrase that really needs to die.

I'm sure some asshole at KXL thought they were being pretty damn clever.

(Thanks, Laura.)

Weird-Ass Craigslist Posting, Part 22: "Secrets of the Orient"

"Young, gay, Asian waiters to help out on an over-the-top gay, costume party."

Oh, hell. You've got to be kidding me. Another weird, racist gem posted to Craigslist. This one comes from the Portland area, where a guy named John recently put the call out for "2 young, gay, Asian waiters" to help out with his upcoming Asian-themed gay soiree, "The Secrets of the Orient: The Year of the Snake." Yeah. John promises "it will be awesome!" I have a strong feeling it will not be awesome:

All Asian cyclists look the same

Oh, the hazards of biking while Asian. Highly amused by this embarrassing incident out of Portland... Last weekend, a bunch of bicycle activists went for a ride across the city to promote better streets. Or something. So what happens when a random Asian dude that nobody knows shows up to participate in the ride?

The cyclists accuse him of being an undercover cop.
