Fans yelled racial slurs during girls basketball game

Witnesses say opposing fans yelled racist comments at McClatchy High School's girls basketball team.



Sarcastic slow clap for classy sportsmanship. In Sacramento, parents and students are speaking out after a large crowd of fans chanted racial slurs at players during a recent high school girls basketball game.

During a game last month between McClatchy High School and Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills, witnesses say that Oak Ridge fans chanted racial slurs at McClatchy's Asian American players. Glen Kumamoto, whose daughter plays for McClatchy, says that Oak Ridge fans were yelling offensive comments about the girls' weight and appearance, as well as references to "soy sauce" and "little eyes."

"A lot of our girls on our team are of Asian descent. So I started to hear chants like 'soy sauce' 'go back to Fiji,' gestures about small eyes things like that," Kumamoto told KCRA News.

Missing father of the bride found dead

55-year-old Prasad Moparti was last seen alive at his daughter's wedding reception near Sacramento.



Tragic news out of California... In Sacramento, authorities have recovered the body of a 55-year-old man who disappeared earlier this month during his daughter's wedding reception while visiting from India.

The Sacramento County Corner confirmed that the body of Prasad Moparti was found floating in a waterway downstream from the wedding reception where he was last seen alive on February 13.

Sacramento Kings cancel "Year of the Monkey" shirt giveaway after player complaint

Someone was clearly not paying attention to the unintended implications of this promotion.



This week, the Sacramento Kings scrapped a commemorative Lunar New Year t-shirt giveaway celebrating the Year of the Monkey after a player noted the shirts could be deemed offensive during Black History Month.

Player DeMarcus Cousins took issue with the shirt design, which depicted a monkey in Kings colors. The shirts were supposed to be given out to fans on Monday night during Sacramento's game against the Milwaukee Bucks, but were pulled at the last minute after Cousins raised the issue with team management.

Suspect arrested in stabbing of Spencer Stone

28-year-old James Tran is charged with attempted murder.



In Sacramento, police have arrested a suspect in connection with the stabbing of Spencer Stone, the U.S. Air Force Airman who was hailed as a hero for helping to thwart a terrorist attack on a train in France.

28-year-old James Tran was arrested on suspicion of stabbing Stone multiple times outside a nightclub in midtown Sacramento last month. The fight, which was caught on a surveillance camera, was apparently sparked by some kind of dispute between Tran's and Stone's friends over a cell phone video.

In Sacramento, investigators are asking for the public's help identifying the suspects responsible for stabbing France train hero Spencer Stone during a fight outside a bar earlier this month. Police have released composite sketches of the suspects, who are described as Asian men.

23-year-old U.S. Airman Spencer Stone, who was hailed as a hero along with two friends after they helped stop a terrorist attack on a Paris-bound train this summer, was stabbed multiple times during an altercation with a group of suspects on October 8. Stone was hospitalized with three stab wounds to the torso.

French train attack hero stabbed in Sacramento

Spencer Stone was reportedly stabbed during a fight with "two Asian adult males."



Spencer Stone, one of three Americans who helped foil a terror attack on a French train in August, was stabbed after a fight early Thursday morning in Sacramento. The suspects are described as two Asian men.

23-year-old Airman First Class Spencer Stone was stabbed repeatedly during a fight outside a bar in midtown Sacramento. He reportedly suffered a wound to the heart and his left lung, and was taken to a local hospital, where he is listed in "stable condition." Police say the attack is not related to the incident in France.

The incident apparently started as a "verbal argument" that ended up on the street and led to a physical confrontation. Security camera footage shows a group of about eight men -- including Stone, bleeding on his shirt -- involved in a fight in the middle of the street:

89-year-old Sacramento man arrested for killing wife

Masaharu Ono is accused of murdering 83-year-old Hiroko Ono.



Damn. This is one of those stories I wish I hadn't heard about, because it just bums me the hell out. Last week in Sacramento, an 89-year-old man was arrested in connection with the murder of his 83-year-old wife.

Masaharu Ono was jailed Friday in Sacramento County on a single count of murder after his wife Hiroko Ono was found dead in their home. While Ono claimed to authorities that he found her dead, coroner's officials determined that she had injuries that contributed to her death and were suspicious.

According to the Sacramento Bee, Ono used a "sharp instrument" to kill his wife.

Just heard about this awful, upsetting news out of the Sacramento area... In Del Paso Heights, the death of a 5-year-old girl found hanging has been ruled a tragic accident.

Krista Nichols was found hanging at her grandmother's home on Sunday evening. According to authorities, she somehow attached some kind of rope to a hook meant for potted plants on her living room ceiling, then unintentionally hanged herself.

They're still waiting on the final ruling from the coroner's office, but there's reportedly nothing to indicate foul play. It appears that nobody was watching the girl at the time.

Man who saved farms of interned Japanese Americans dies

Sacramento farmer Bob Fletcher saved the farms of several Japanese American families during World War II.



Bob Fletcher, a farmer who saved the farms of several Japanese American families when they were interned during World War II, died in Sacramento on May 23. He was 101.

While Japanese Americans lost their homes and businesses to thieves or bank foreclosures, Fletcher sacrificed his job and standing in the community to save the farms of the Nitta, Okamoto and Tsukamoto families. He worked the land, paid the mortgages and turned the farms back to the families when they returned to Sacramento after the war -- all this in a time of rampant anti-Japanese sentiment:

Suspect sought in cricket tournament shooting

Investigators are still looking for Amandeep Singh Dhami.

Last week in Sacramento, sheriff's deputies arrested 24-year-old Gurpreet Singh Gosal in connection with a shooting outside a Sikh temple complex that left one man dead and another wounded.
