Apply to the 2016 Kundiman Asian American Writing Retreat

June 15-19 at Fordham University



Hey writers! Kundiman is now accepting applications for the 2016 Kundiman Asian American Writing Retreat, an annual retreat to help mentor the next generation of Asian American writers. During the Retreat, nationally renowned Asian American poets and writers conduct workshops with fellows. This year's faculty includes Kimiko Hahn, Lee Herrick, R. Zamora Linmark, and Bich Minh Nguyen.

It's happening June 15-19 at Fordham University in New York. Here's a video about the retreat:

Page Turner: The AAWW Food & Books Festival, October 5

Twelve reasons to get your literature lovin' self to Page Turner.



New York City, this looks legit. On Saturday, October 5, the Asian American Writers' Workshop presents the Page Turner Food and Books Festival. Readings, performances, dumpling-making sessions, a DIY poetry booth, and much more. And it's all free to the public and fun for everyone. Here's AAWW's list of all the reasons you should go:

Apply to CultureStrike's UndocuWriting Retreat



Calling undocumented writers! Apologies for the short notice, but I want to make sure you know about UndocuWriting Retreat, an intensive writing workshop for undocumented writers, powered by the pro-migrant arts organization CultureStr/ke. The Retreat, happening August 13-17 in Oakland, is intended to help young undocumented writers of all levels, backgrounds, and interests tell their stories.

Ten writers will be selected to participate in the retreat. Travel and lodging will be provided for all workshop participants, and there is no fee to apply. But you'll have to act fast -- the applications are due on July 12. That's this Friday. Here are some more details about what you'll learn and experience at the retreat:

Lee & Low Books 2013 New Voices Award Writing Contest

Hey, writers! Lee & Low Books, an independent children's book publisher focusing on diversity, is currently accepting submissions for the fourteenth annual New Voices Award writing contest.

The Award is given annually for a children's picture book manuscript by a writer of color. The contest encourages writers of color to submit their work to a publisher that takes pride in nurturing new talent.

The winner receive a cash prize of $1000 and a publication contract, including Lee & Low's basic advance and royalties for a first time author. An Honor Award winner will receive a cash prize of $500.

Hyphen Call for Submissions: Fiction and Poetry

Hey, writers. Hyphen wants you! For their next issue, the Asian American news culture magazine is putting the call out for fiction and poetry submissions from talented APIA writers. The submission deadline is June 15.

They're specifically looking stories and poems pertaining to Issue 28's theme: The Future. What the heck does that mean? Anything, really. Have fun and be creative -- the possibilities are endless.

Apply to AAWW's 2013 Open City Fellowship

Open City, an online magazine published by the Asian American Writers' Workshop, documents the pulse of metropolitan Asian America as it's being lived on the streets of New York right now. Open City grants a $5,000 fellowship, career guidance, and publishing opportunities to five Creative Nonfiction Fellows to write and produce both short-form and long-form editorial content on the vibrant immigrant communities of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

Are you an emerging Asian American writer who needs mentorship, financial support and a place to publish? You're invited to apply for the Open City 2013-2014 Creative Nonfiction Fellows. Past Open City Creative Nonfiction Fellows have gone on to publish in the Atlantic, The Nation and the New York Times. This could be you, so get on this with your writerly self.

Writer Ken Liu is a triple nominee for the Nebula Awards

Cool news. Writer Ken Liu, who became the first author to win all of science fiction's three major honors -- the Hugo, the Nebula and the World Fantasy Award -- for his short story "The Paper Menagerie," is a triple nominee for this year's recently announced Nebula Awards: 2012 Nebula Awards Nominees Announced.

The Nebula Awards are presented by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Liu is nominated for best novella ("All the Flavors"), best novelette ("The Waves") and best short story ("The Bookmaking Habits of Select Species"). Winners will be announced at the Forty-Eighth Nebula Awards Weekend in May.
