Serve the People: Making Asian America in the Long 60s with Karen L. Ishizuka

If you're in the Bay Area this weekend, here's a cool book event... Karen L. Ishizuka, author of the new book Serve the People: Making Asian American in the Long Sixties, will be giving a keynote presentation as part of the Asian Pacific Islanders Issues Series 2016 conference. The talk will be followed by a panel discussion and signing. It's happening Sunday, April 3 at UC Berkeley's Multicultural Center.

Man wanted in sexual assaults targeting Asian women

Police have released video of a suspect linked to three assaults in the last week near UC Berkeley.



In Berkeley, police have issued a warning and released images of a suspect linked to three sexual assaults in the last week. All of the victims have been Asian women assaulted near UC Berkeley.

Berkeley Police Release Video of Possible Suspect in Series of Sexual Assaults

On Thursday, the Berkeley Police Department released video of a man identified as a possible suspect in three sexual assault cases targeting college-aged Asian women. In one of the assaults, the suspect violently knocked the woman to the ground and forcibly grabbed her from behind.

CAAM presents CAAMFest 2015

March 12-22 in San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland



Bay Area film lovers! It's getting about time for one of my favorite events of the year. CAAMFest, formerly the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, returns with another exciting celebration of film, music, food and digital media from the world's most innovative Asian and Asian American artists.

CAAMFest 2015 will showcase the work of new Asian and Asian American artists, as well as pay tribute to the pioneers who have paved the way for Asian Americans in media and entertainment. It's all going down March 12-22 in San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland. This kick off Thursday, March 12 with Opening Night Gala presentation of writer/director Benson Lee's coming-of-age comedy Seoul Searching.

"Our Name is Rebel": Images of Berkeley's Radical South Asian Legacy is an art show that celebrates 100 years of radical organizing by South Asian Americans, including the Ghadar Party, an organization founded to fight for India's liberation against British rule, and other local South Asian American movements for justice. It opens at the Guerrilla Café in Berkeley on November 3 and runs throughout the month:

Berkeley appoints first Asian American fire chief in continental United States

Last week, Gil Dong was officially named chief of the Berkeley Fire Department, becoming the first Asian American fire chief in the continental United States: Berkeley appoints first Asian-American fire chief in continental U.S.

Dong, a 23-year fire veteran who first joined as a firefighter-paramedic in 1990 and has worked in every division of the department, has been serving as interim fire chief since last December. His appointment became official at last week's Berkeley City Council meeting.

In his new job, Dong will oversee 134 staff members while taking charge of a $34 million budget. He says his priorities will be training, emergency preparedness and maintaining infrastructure and equipment. And yes, it's about damn time we've had an Asian American fire chief:
