They Call Us Bruce 222: They Call Us Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom

Jeff Yang and Phil Yu present an unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asian America.

What's up, podcast listeners? We've got another episode of our podcast They Call Us Bruce. (Almost) each week, my good friend, writer/columnist Jeff Yang and I host an unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asian America, with a strong focus on media, entertainment and popular culture.

In this episode, we welcome James Wan, filmmaker behind iconic movies like Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, Furious 7, Aquaman and now, its sequel, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. He talks about his journey from making indie horror flicks to tentpole blockbusters, shares his tricks for avoiding sequel-itis, and attempts to say something bad about Randall Park. Presented in partnership with Gold House.

James Wan is working on a 'MacGyver' reboot for CBS

'Furious 7' director will produce and direct a revival of the 1980s action series.

MacGyver

Here's a reboot I can get behind. Hot off the blockbuster success of Furious 7, director James Wan will serve as executive producer and direct a TV revival of the 1980s action classic MacGyver.

CBS rebooting MacGyver with Furious 7 director

The original MacGyver, which ran for seven seasons on ABC, starred Richard Dean Anderson as a resourceful top agent for the Phoenix Foundation, who never carries a gun and draws on his genius scientific knowledge to thwart bad guys and get out of jams. It was one of my favorite shows back in the day.

In case you forgot the glorious MacGyver theme song (and Richard Dean Anderson's glorious hair):

James Wan to direct live-action 'Robotech' movie

'Saw' director signs on to Sony's adaptation of the classic 1980s animated series.

Amidst the cool news that James Wan has signed on to direct Aquaman, I didn't want to overlook the news that the Furious 7 director has also inked a deal to helm a live-action adaptation of Robotech for Sony Pictures.

James Wan Closes Deals to Direct 'Aquaman' and 'Robotech'

Wan is red-hot after directing the blockbuster bajillion-dollar seventh movie of the Fast & Furious franchise. Next, he'll be taking on DC Comics' iconic underwater superhero, but I'm more interested in seeing what he does with a big screen take on the Robotech saga, based on the hit 1980s animated series.

Saw director James Wan to take on Fast & Furious 7

By now, fans of the Fast & Furious movies know that Justin Lin will not be directing the seventh installment. So who's taking over? Universal Pictures is reportedly in talks with James Wan, director of Saw, to direct Fast & Furious 7: James Wan Is Universal's Choice To Helm 'The Fast And The Furious 7.'

According to Deadline, the studio will likely ink the deal by the end of the week. Should be interesting to see how Wan, who directed the original Saw and the horror hit Insidious, handles the signature auto action these movies are known for. He certainly knows how to make modest budgets go a long way.

He's an intriguing choice for the Fast franchise. Whatever the case, he appears to have the endorsement of Justin Lin. Here's the press release-y statement from Justin:

'Saw' director in talks to direct 'MacGyver' movie

James Wan is in negotiations to helm a reboot of the 1980s action series.

They're making a MacGyver movie. Not to be confused with the Saturday Night Live spoof-turned-movie MacGruber. A real MacGyver movie based on the classic 1980s TV show. And it looks like Saw director James Wan is in talks to direct the feature film remake.
