Six arrested in Fresno backyard party shooting

Suspected gang members arrested in the shooting deaths of four men in November.



From The New York Times: Police in California announced Tuesday that they have arrested six suspected gang members in the shooting deaths of four men in November at a backyard gathering of family and friends that they believed was a rival gang's party.

The victims were killed November 17 when gunmen entered the back of a Fresno home through an unlocked gate and used semiautomatic weapons to open fire on people watching a football game in the backyard. Four people were killed, and six people were wounded.

Teen charged in hate crime attack on Sikh man commits suicide

17-year-old Alexis Mendoza was accused of beating and running over Amrik Singh Bal.



In Fresno, a teen charged in the hate crime assault of an elderly Sikh man has committed suicide. The Fresno County Coroner's Office confirmed that 17-year-old Alexis Mendoza killed himself last week.

Mendoza and another man, 22-year-old Daniel Coronel Wilson, were accused of beating and running over 68-year-old Amrik Singh Bal in vicious hate crime attack on the morning of December 26.

During the attack, one of the assailants reportedly asked him, "Why are you here?"

According to Fresno police, Mendoza and Wilson were driving when they spotted Bal, who was wearing a turban and traditional Sikh robes. Both men got out of the car and beat Bal with their fists, then got back into the car and intentionally ran him over. He suffered a broken collar bone and abrasions to his nose and right hand.

A security camera at a nearby home captured the suspects running over Bal.

Emergency medical services tried to treat Gill, but it was determined that he had already died.

Bal tried to cross the street to get away, but the attackers backed up the car and hit him. Then they got out and beat Bal before fleeing the scene.

This week in Fresno, California, a man pleaded no contest to a hate crime and was sentenced to 13 years in prison for brutally beating an 82-year-old man outside a Sikh temple in 2013.

According to police, Gilbert Garcia Jr. was riding a bicycle when he came upon Piara Singh, who wears a turban and bear in observance of his faith, walking out of the Nanksar Sikh Temple in south Fresno. Garcia beat Singh in the head and body with a steel rod.

Singh was found in a pool of blood, and was hospitalized for over a week with broken bones and ribs, lung lacerations and head injuries requiring twenty stitches.

This wasn't a robbery. Singh had never met or seen Garcia before. Police say that Garcia made racial slurs about Muslims and told Singh, "I'm going to destroy your mosque."
