82-year-old Plara Singh suffered broken bones and ribs, and head injuries requiring twenty stitches after a man attacked him with an iron bar as he came out of the Nanaksar Sikh Temple on Sunday morning.
Fresno police arrested 29-year-old Gilbert Garcia on charges of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the attack, which is being investigated as a possible hate crime:
Singh - who works as volunteer at the temple and goes there on a daily basis - had just left the temple when he was attacked by a man who "came out of the shadows and just viscously attacked him, beating him with a bar," his grandson, Herman Sihota, told Fresno television KGPE-TV.According to temple officials, the attack wasn't a robbery, and Singh had never even seen this man before. This was just straight up hate. This guy was armed with hate, ignorance and an iron bar, and beat up on an old man with a turban. Cowardly as shit. Singh was in a local hospital where he's being treated for head wounds, broken bones and ribs.
Another relative, Charanjit Sihota, told The Associated Press that when Singh was found he was in a pool of blood, but that his condition had improved by late Tuesday.
