asian arts initiative presents marvels & monsters: unmasking asian images in u.s. comics, 1942-1986, february 3 - march 23
Philly comic book lovers! The Asian Arts Initiative presents Marvels & Monsters: Unmasking Asian Images in U.S. Comics, 1942-1986 starting Friday, February 3.
The exhibit, which draws from the collection of Yellow Peril author and scholar William F. Wu, includes a retroactive look at how Asians were portrayed in graphic art, organized by the archetypes they reflect: the Alien, the Kamikaze, the Lotus Blossom... I think you get the point.
Once your blood is at a boiling point, though, the organizers are also highlighting the works of contemporary graphic novels written by Asian Americans. More:

music video: "run fly fall" by paul j. kim
Los Angeles-based musician/speaker Paul J. Kim, who music I first became acquainted with at one of those Kollaboration events a couple years back, recently released a new music video for his song "Run Fly Fall."
The song is entirely a cappella -- everything you hear is Paul's voice, from the verses to the melody to the percussion. It's a pretty cool track, and they've come up with some pretty compelling visuals to go along with it:
81-year-old woman brutally beaten in el cerrito

The woman, described as an 81-year-old Asian female in a white coat, was found bleeding and badly injured in a dark corner near a tire store on Saturday morning. Police say she was dissheveled and unable to talk, and was airlifted to a hospital:

Blech. Is anyone in need of some vomit? Then you should read this sad Washington DC Craigslist posting by a 48-year-old lonely loser looking for an "unsophisticated Chinese girl." It will have you barfing right away:
the walking dead re-imagined as a cheesy 1980s sitcom
This is for fans of The Walking Dead... Saw this on io9, got a big kick out of it: What if The Walking Dead was a heartwarming 1980s sitcom?
AMC's apocalyptic zombie drama, which includes Steven Yeun as Glenn, gets mashed up with the theme song to Growing Pains, and re-imagined as an impossibly upbeat 1980s-era sitcom. It's pretty amusing. Take a look:
marine sentenced to 30 days for hazing harry lew
There's been a lot of attention, rightly so, on the death of Army Private Danny Chen. Meanwhile, one the Marines who took part in the hazing of Lance Cpl. Harry Lew before he committed suicide, has pleaded guilty: Marine admits hazing California Marine who committed suicide in Afghanistan.
Lance Cpl. Jacob Jacoby, who pleaded guilty to assault, was sentenced to thirty days in jail and will have his rank reduced to private first class. He admitted to punching and kicking Lew, apparently out of frustration that Lew repeatedly fell asleep while on watch:

music video: "I love lucy" by big phony
Our good friend, singer/songwriter Big Phony, has been international as of late, currently making some musical waves in South Korea. It's been a while since I've seen him, so I was quite pleased to see the latest music video for "I Love Lucy," one of my favorite songs from his album Kicking Punching Bags. Take a look:

big trophy for little aubrey
Just wanted to share this crazy cute photo of 4-year-old Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who plays the older, more talkative Lily on the ABC comedy Modern Family, standing next to a trophy that's just about as big as she is.
Over the weekend, Aubrey and her castmates collectively picked up a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. She got to go up on stage and everything. And if what I'm reading is correct, she's the youngest actor ever to win a SAG Award.
Congratulations, kid!

One small step... In Toronto, two teens have made headlines for sending a Lego figure carrying a Canadian flag into the stratosphere with a weather balloon, and capturing the tiny toy man's space journey on camera: Lego man in space: one (very) small step - video.
Mathew Ho and Asad Muhammad, both 17, attached four cameras to a homemade styrofoam spacecraft and launched that sucker fifteen miles into the sky, recording and tracking the little Lego astronaut's incredible journey into the final frontier and back. Check out the video:

new music: "sounds like love" by oak & gorski
Some new tunes for you... Check out "Sounds Like Love," the latest single from Oak & Gorski (aka Ken Oak and Ed Gorski). While still bringing their distinct cello rock vibe, I think it's their most commercial song to date -- and I mean that in a good way. Take a listen:

victim's family files lawsuit in beach beating death

Last week, the parents of the victim filed a wrongful death suit against Malecek and his family: Family of Mt. Carmel student killed in Indiana fight files lawsuit.
Malecek apparently "sucker punched" 17-year-old Kevin Kennelly in the head, sending him to the hospital where he died of massive brain trauma. woman sentenced to death for killing husband and two sons
Damn, this is depressing as hell. Last week in Southern California, a woman was sentenced to death for murdering her husband and two young sons in 2007: Manling Williams sentenced to death for murder of husband, sons in Rowland Heights.
Manling Tsang Williams, who was 29 at the time, suffocated her 3-year-old and 7-year-old sons while they slept, then stabbed her husband to death -- nearly a hundred times -- with a samurai sword. She apparently did all this so that she could be with her lover.

casting call for blood games seeks a truckload of asian stereotypes
Um, what the hell is this? Got this casting call passed along to me, for a low-budget feature film called Blood Games. And it does not look good.
I don't know what this movie is, but they're looking a handful of Asian guys to play an "average karate master," a "sneaky Asian tour guide," a "scary looking" Asian fighter, and an Asian cop. They certainly aren't hiding the fact that they want some seriously stereotypical Asians.
But really, the worst part is the characters' names. Take a look:
