taiwanese filmmaker edward yang dies

Taiwanese director Edward Yang, who won best director in 2000 at the Cannes Film Festival and was known for his realistic portrayals of modern Taiwan, died last week of complications from colon cancer. He was 59: Taiwanese Director Yang Dies at 59. He's probably best known for his acclaimed film Yi Yi (A One and a Two), about a Taiwanese family that copes with the serious illness of their elderly mother. It's a fantastic, wonderful film. I've admired Yang's work for a while, and I've wondered when we'd get to see a follow-up, so this is pretty sad news. If you haven't seen it already, do yourself a favor and watch Yi Yi.
