asians got it on in the year of the pig

Last year was the Year of the Golden Pig, my friends. And that means Asian people were getting busy. According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the city had a surge in local births during 2007—half of which could be attributed to a sharp increase in births to Asian women: An Asian Baby Boom, in the Year of the Pig.

Citing news accounts, the health department suggested that "many Chinese couples timed their pregnancies to coincide with the Year of the Golden Pig, a particularly auspicious year in the Chinese lunar calendar." The number of local births surged by 3,455 during 2007, rising to 128,961 from 125,506, and births to Asian women accounted for half of the increase.

You see, within the Chinese lunar calendar, the year of the pig is considered particularly fortuitous for births. This year, the year of the rat, not so much. So it seems that lots of people were trying to have little Pig babies in 2007. And succeeded! Nice work, people.
