slumdog millionaire wins big at golden globe awards

Big night for Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire at the Golden Globes Awards, where it cleaned up with statues for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay, Best Original Score. Here's the full list of winners.

Hell, the movie has had a huge awards season in general, picking up (well-deserved) best picture trophies among numerous critics' associations and the Critics' Choice Awards. I think you can count on some serious Oscar nominations for Slumdog when they're announced next week. Stay tuned...

In other movie news, Gran Torino, starring and directed by Clint Eastwood, opened in the wide release and came in number one at the box office over the weekend: 'Gran Torino' revs up weekend b.o.

While I thought the movie just okay, I do think its success is very significant. I'm willing to bet that this is the first time a Hmong American story has hit this many eyeballs. In terms of representation, this is both a good and a bad thing, but either way, it's a big deal.

And while I'm talking about Gran Torino, here's a story on Hmong American star Ahney Her, a first-time actor who does a solid job in the movie: Sexton teen stars opposite Clint Eastwood as 'Gran Torino' hits theaters nationwide.
