the balloon boy backlash

I'll admit it -- like a lot of people, I got caught up in yesterday's balloon boy hype. The thought of 6-year-old old Falcon (is there a more perfect name?) soaring 6,000 feet above the Colorado sky was both a little bit horrifying and exciting. And it must've been a slow news day, because the media coverage was insane. For a moment, American went a little crazy over balloon boy.

Of course, it all turned out to be a lot of hype over nothing, with the kid just hiding out in a box up in the attic. Turns out, Balloon Boy was actually just Box Boy. Little Falcon did not go on an airborne adventure, and the entire news-watching nation had been staring at an empty balloon for nearly two hours : Balloon boy's story turned out to be hot air.

I'm sure it'll still be all over the morning talk shows today. Falcon's family already appeared on a couple of news programs last night. But here's the peculiar thing. On CNN, when asked why he didn't come out when his parents called for him, Falcon says, "We did this for the show." Wait, what? Did the kid just admit the whole thing staged? What does that mean?
