google job interviewee killed in oakland robbery

Another sad story of senseless violence out of Oakland... Jinghong Kang of Fairfax, Virgnia, a 44-year-old computer engineer who was in the Bay Area for a job interview at Google Inc., was shot and killed by robbers on Sunday night: Job hopeful from Virginia is slain in Oakland. The assailants took just $17 from him:
Kang had gotten his teeth cleaned earlier in the day and had returned to his rental car with a dental hygienist when he was shot, police said.

His dental appointment was in preparation for a job interview that had been scheduled for Monday at Google in Mountain View, police said. Investigators said Kang and the hygienist knew each other because they had been members of the same church.

She was helping Kang enter directions back to his hotel into the car's GPS system when two men approached them, police said. The men demanded money, and one of them shot Kang, police said. The hygienist was not hurt.

A woman who answered the phone Monday at Lake Merritt Dental, where Kang had his teeth cleaned, said no one was available to comment.

The assailants escaped. Police did not release a detailed description of them.

The motive appears to be "an attempted robbery gone bad," said Officer Jeff Thomason, a police spokesman. Kang handed over the $17 he had on him, police said, but the men shot him anyway.
Kang, a father of three sons, handed over what little money he had on him, but they shot him anyway! He died at the scene. The woman was not harmed. More here: Fairfax man killed before Google interview.
