angry reader of the week: nelson wong

Hey everybody! It's time to meet another Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is Nelson Wong.

Who are you?
Nelson Wong. I'm the founder of AArisings, an entertainment resource about Asian Pacific Americans.

What are you?
I'm a self-proclaimed geek who is just trying to make a difference and to make the world a better place for future generations in some way, shape, or form. I'm an Asian American pop-culture junkie who tries to focus on breaking stereotypes by showcasing the diversity that is out there. I never trained in martial arts, my knowledge of Cantonese is limited to a few swear words and food dishes, I flunked advanced calculus, and I always sat in the back of the classroom.

One day I hope to become a responsible adult who has taught his children the lesson of not taking life too seriously.

Where are you?
Geographically, in San Francisco Bay Area.

In terms of my life, middle-aged now and less politically edgy than my 20's but no less passionate about my goal of diversifying the images of Asian Americans.

Where are you from?
Born in Chinese Hospital in San Francisco, California and raised in San Francisco. Grew up primarily in a largely Latino community so my wardrobe consisted of Ben Davis jeans and black Sir Jac jacket with collar up in my younger days.

What do you do?
By day I develop applications for the web and by night I'm the voices of many characters while reading books to my children. Outside of those things, I maintain my site AArisings by adding new links to other Asian American related sites and posting interviews with interesting people in the community at large.

What are you all about?
I'm about trying to make a difference with actions. I ask myself "what am I going to do about it?" and then figure out how to best affect a change in my own way. It's easy to complain about stereotypes that exist but I choose to focus on doing something to change the perceptions, even in some small way. I focus on exposing people to the diversity that is out there in the Asian American entertainment community because I feel that's one of the best ways to break stereotypes that currently exist.

What makes you angry?
I'm pretty mellow overall. It takes a lot to make me angry but ultimately ignorance and acts of abuse, including bullying, make me angry.
