According to university police, the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are likely. No mention of whether this is being treated as a hate crime, but they did say that "the students who were attacked may have been targeted because of race." Yeah, duh.
The incident happened at about 4 a.m. Sunday at Forest Quad, IU Police Chief Keith Cash said.
"Eight Asian students were walking to Forest Quad B Tower when a group of five males and three females said, 'Hey look, here comes Chinatown. Look at all the (expletive),'" Cash said.
Police said the two groups got into a verbal exchange before three or four of the African-Americans walked toward the Asians, battering two of them and robbing two more.
Cash said police searched the dorm room of Terry Lee Campbell Jr., 18, Monday afternoon, but he was not there.
Just before 10 p.m., police said they received a tip that Campbell was at the Read Residence Center. He was arrested there on preliminary charges of robbery and battery with serious bodily injury.
Police have asked with information about the case to call 812-855-4111. More here: 1 arrest made in robbery, battery of Asian students.
