sidwell friend school is serving "asian" food today. so what?

Wow. I guess things are pretty slow in the WUSA 9 news room. Because this story, written by Manny Fantis, appears to be a blatant attempt to create some bullshit controversy out of nothing. It's also flat-out ignorant as hell: Sidwell Friends School, Sasha and Malia Obama's School, Opts For Asian, including Japanese Food On Pearl Harbor Day.

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. A day of remembrance. But this observant reporter has made the shocking discovery that the Sidwell Friends School, where President Obama's daughters attend, is serving up -- gasp! -- Asian food on the lunch menu. On today of all days! The insensitivity.
What are President Obama's kids eating at school on Pearl Harbor day? Japanese food, of course!

Sidwell Friends School's website shows the menu for Wednesday December 7th, 2011, the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day, as an Asian food day.

Pearl Harbor Day is usually a time of remembrance for Americans. On December 7th, 1941, thousands of Americans died in a sneak attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor Navy base in Hawaii. An attack that thrust the U.S. into World War II.

It was the bloodiest foreign attack on U.S. soil in the modern war era, until the September 11th attacks in 2001.

Here are the options for Malia Obama and her sister, Sasha on the "Day that will live in Infamy:"

December 7, 2011

MS/US
Asian Mushroom Soup
Oriental Noodle Salad
Classic Spinach Salad
Teriyaki Marinated Chicken Strips
Szechuan Tofu & Veggies
Garlic Roasted Edamame
Vegetable Fried Rice
Fortune Cookies
Holy shit. Oriental Noodle Salad? Does the Sidwell Friends School have no decency? No, seriously, Manny Fantis is a moron.

First of all, there's little on this menu that could legitimately be called Japanese cuisine. But on top of that, the fact that the writer insinuates that serving Szechuan Tofu & Veggies or Vegetable Fried Rice -- "Asian food" -- is somehow un-American or disrespectful on a day like Pearl Harbor Day, that's just idiotic.

Seriously? We're talking about teriyaki-marinated chicken strips? Who the hell approved this story for publication? (Thanks, Diana.)
