a trip to the supermarket: turkey broth, salt and a hate crime

Last week in San Jose, a South Asian man was assaulted by a group of men who broke his jaw, knocked out his teeth and called him a "terrorist": San Jose man punched, called 'terrorist' on grocery trip to Lucky.

The victim doesn't identify himself for fear of retaliation, but according to the story, he is an Indian American man who grew up and went to college in Silicon Valley. And now he's a victim of a hate crime -- during a trip to the grocery store:
The victim said that while he was being punched, he saw headlights from cars and heard the sound of shopping carts being pushed nearby. He said he can't understand why no one helped him.

The man, who was dressed in American-style clothing at the time of the attack, said he was picking up last-minute items to host his family for Thanksgiving when, out of the blue, three or four men walked up to him as he was pulling out of the lot.

"They were pretty drunk and belligerent," he said. "They had a big bottle of tequila."

He said they blocked his Honda from leaving, and kept asking, "Why are you staring? What are you looking at?"

"The next thing I know," the man said, "someone's hitting me. They grabbed my scarf. They dragged me out of my car. Someone said they had a gun."

He said that suddenly, his neck was wet and cold, and it began oozing blood. That's when they spit on him and called him a terrorist.
So far, none of the suspects have been arrested. Authorities are trying to track down witnesses and find out whether the grocery store's security camera caught anything. Until then, the guy is left to deal with his injuries, the cost of oral surgery, and the knowledge that racist, violent assholes got away with kicking his ass.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the San Jose Police Department's assault unit at 408-277-4161.
