teenager running for mayor of fremont, california

This November, there are five people running for Mayor of Fremont, California. Three candidates happen to be Asian American -- and one of them is a teenager: Teenager runs for mayor of Fremont.

18-year-old Aziz Akbari, a sophomore studying mechanical engineering at the University of Southern California, is barely old enough to vote, but he's serious about local politics and has sights set on his hometown's mayor seat:
"I've been paying attention to local politics since I was about 10 or 11 years old, so I know what's been going on for the past few years and I know what needs to be done," he said.

Akbari is a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering. He's also a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and is balancing homework with a busy campaign schedule.

Akbari's campaign office is just down the hall from his bedroom. His social media campaign has already attracted more than 16,000 page views.

He said it encouraged many young people to register to vote or get involved in the campaign.
