Angry Reader of the Week: Yuh-Line Niou

"I'm angry about why we don't love each other enough to be angry for each other."

Hello, internet friends. It is time meet the Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is Yuh-Line Niou.

Who are you?

My name is Yuh-Line Niou. I am the daughter of Wen-Ching Hwang Niou and Chorng-Shyr Niou.

What are you?

I am the oldest child in my Chinese American immigrant family. I am .5 generation immigrant and came with my parents to the United States when I was only 6 months old.

Where are you?

I represent the 65th Assembly District in New York which covers Lower Manhattan.

Where are you from?

I was born in Taiwan, my parents immigrated to the United States to a town called Moscow, Idaho for my father's studies, then we moved to Beaverton, Oregon, after that we moved to El Paso, Texas, and my parents settled in Vancouver, Washington where I went to high school, and then I moved to Olympia, Washington for college and Seattle, Washington for work. I ended up coming to New York for my graduate studies and have stayed here since!

What do you do?

I am a New York State Assembly Member. I consider myself an anti-poverty advocate and I do what I can to find policy solutions to the problems that need to be addressed systemically.

What are you all about?

I am all about my community. I love the people and the diversity and the stories. I am all about listening. I love to know what is happening with folks so that we can celebrate or better understand or cry with each other. I am all about systemic solutions. So many of the problems that we see day to day are the effects of systemic issues that were created to protect or hurt or keep out or help certain groups of people. We need to know where we want to go and find solutions and systems that can help to make our state more just.

What makes you angry?

These days? Everything. I'm angry about racism. I'm angry about sexism. I'm angry about ableism. I'm angry about homophobia. I'm angry about purposeful ignorance. I’m angry about hate. I'm angry about why we can stand by and watch people treat people so badly. I'm angry about apathy. I’m angry about dismissal. I'm angry about why we don't love each other enough to be angry for each other. I'm angry about folks not being angry enough.
