"SLAYSIAN": DIGITAL EXHIBITION

Curated by Jenny Lam

SLAYSIAN is a celebration—a celebrAsian, if you will—of local Asian American artists. Created by artist and independent curator Jenny Lam, SLAYSIAN is the long-awaited follow-up to 2016’s acclaimed LEXICON, which was itself the successor to 2012’s acclaimed I CAN DO THAT, which was named the audience choice for “Best Art Exhibit” in the 20th anniversary edition of NewCity’s Best of Chicago issue. This group exhibition was originally scheduled to open on March 20, 2020, with a reception in a 5,000 sq. ft. space, free and open to the public. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the physical show has been postponed indefinitely. Most of the show’s 39 participating artists were discovered via an open call, and for some of them, SLAYSIAN would have been their first exhibition ever. All of these artists’ work deserves to be seen far and wide. So until things get better (have hope; they will), here’s a digital exhibition.

GOLD HOUSE: DIGITAL CAMPAIGN

"We Are #ALLAMERICANS"

The All Americans Movement is a cross-cultural campaign unifying all Americans to stand together in support of marginalized communities most affected by COVID-19. While the virus knows no race, sex, or class, those with the least are getting hurt the most. Asian communities are facing a surge in racist attacks while the Black and Latinx communities have been disproportionately impacted in mortalities and unemployment. It's time we stand together to rise together. We are, afterall, #AllAmericans. Support COVID-19 relief with independent businesses by purchasing #AllAmericans products whose proceeds go towards rectifying the pandemic. Share your #AllAmericans story to amplify the movement. Stay empowered with resources on other ways to help.

Participating celebrities include Hasan Minhaj, Lisa Ling, Dave Chapelle, Noah Centineo, Sen. Kamala Harris, Olivia Munn, John Leguizamo, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, George Takei, Daniel Dae Kim, Jack Dorsey, Marc Cuban, Phillip LIm, Prabal Gurung, Andrew Yang

SAN DIEGO ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL: ONLINE FILM FEST

"SDAFF ONLINE: MAY MADNESS"

The organizers of the San Diego Asian Film Festival have curated 31 films for May — all available online through streaming platforms. Supplementing the history chronicled in PBS' Asian Americans series, "SDAFF Online: May Madness" collects the histories too obscure, too "minor," too notorious, too fantastic, and too idiosyncratic for a more encyclopedic history.

Each week, we’ll provide a playlist of films you can stream from home, moving forward across the decades. Watch whichever films catch your eye, though you won’t want to miss the films for which we’ll be holding filmmaker Q&As. Your online rentals or purchases directly support the filmmakers or the distributors who have invested in their stories. Every week, we also suggest a short film you can access for free.

LOS ANGELES ASIAN PACIFIC FILM FESTIVAL: VIRTUAL SHOWCASE - DAY 1

"AMERICAN MOVEMENTS"

SNEAK PREVIEW: ASIAN AMERICANS: Episodes 3 & 4 available to stream all day

Q&A PANEL AT 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET
Panelists and moderator TBA (60 mins)

An early look at two episodes of the five-part documentary TV series Asian Americans that will air nationally on May 11 and 12. Narrated by Daniel Dae Kim and Tamlyn TomitaAsian Americans chronicles the contributions and challenges of Asian Americans, the fastest-growing ethnic group in America. Personal histories and new academic research will cast a fresh lens on U.S. history and the role Asian Americans have played in it.

EPISODE 3: "GOOD AMERICANS" (1950s-1960s)
Produced by S. Leo Chiang, narrated by Daniel Dae Kim

Interviewees include Jeff Chang, Randall Park, Helen Zia, Alex Fabros, David Henry Hwang, Winifred Chin, Wendy Mink and Tammy Duckworth

The episode opens with a retro montage of 1950s Asian screen images that populate the Cold War years. It is a time of contradiction for Asian Americans. They are heralded as a quiet Model Minority, an image that is used as a wedge against African American demands for civil rights and equality. At the same time, they are targeted as perpetual foreigners and suspected as Communist subversives. It is also a time of bold ambition, as Asian Americans aspire for the first time to national political office, while a cultural and political awakening simmers beneath the surface.

EPISODE 4: "GENERATION RISING" (1960s-1970s)
Produced by Grace Lee, narrated by Tamlyn Tomita

Interviewees include Lily Lee Adams, Laureen Chew, Nobuko Miyamoto, Brenda and Jan Sunoo, Ham Tran and Viet Thanh Nguyen.

A young generation is transformed by the Vietnam War and social tumult at their universities and in their communities. They fight for equality in the fields, on campuses and in the culture, and define a new identity: Asian Americans. Just as quickly, new immigrants and refugees arrive and expand the definition of Asian America.

ASIAN AMERICANS ADVANCING JUSTICE & HOLLABACK: VIRTUAL WORKSHOP

"BYSTANDER INTERVENTION TRAINING" (60 mins)

One way we can take action to protect our communities is to learn ways to intervene effectively as a bystander without compromising safety. We're excited to announce that Hollaback! and Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC are partnering for a virtual workshop on bystander intervention. The one-hour, interactive training will teach you Hollaback!'s 5 D's of bystander intervention methodology.

We'll start by talking about the types of disrespect that Asian and Asian American folks are facing right now — from microaggressions to violence — using a tool we call the "spectrum of disrespect.

You'll learn what to look for and the positive impact that bystander intervention has on individuals and communities

We'll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct; and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening.

We'll have time at the end for practice, and you'll leave feeling more confident intervening the next time you see Anti-Asian and Asian American harassment online or in-person. Sessions will also be conducted May 7, 13, 21 and 30 at different times.

"MONDAY NITE VC: OMAI FA’ATASI & VAITAFE"

OMAI FA’ATASI and VAITAFE available to stream all day

OMAI FA’ATASI: SAMOA MO SAMOA (1979, directed by Takashi Fujii)

One of the crown jewels of Visual Communications’ landmark video docudrama series “Hidden Treasures,” Omai Fa'atasi profiles the Samoan American youth development organization of LA’s South Bay communities, and unveils the history of Samoan migration to America. Ofering a crucial voice to the perspectives and aspirations of Samoan American youths and young adults, Omai Fa'atasi provides a glimpse into a largely misunderstood community whose members strive to become integrated into American society without losing their traditions and values.

VAITAFE (1981, directed by Foe Alo, Jr. and Takashi Fujii)

Vaitafe is a gifted Samoan student who comes to Southern California to pursue his goal of higher education, but encounters numerous obstacles standing in the way of academic success. Through Samoan traditions of fa’alavelaves (family concerns), the bonding of family, church and community in the Fa’a Samoa spirit of mutual support unite to come to Vaitafe’s aid. A fictional follow-up to Visual Communications’ landmark documentary production Omai Fa'atasi, Vaitafe is an inspiring story about community support and self-determination.

"ASIAN AMERICANS — EPISODES 1 AND 2"

Asian Americans is a five-hour film series that delivers a bold, fresh perspective on a history that matters today, more than ever. As America becomes more diverse, and more divided, while facing unimaginable challenges, how do we move forward together? Told through intimate and personal lives, the series will cast a new lens on U.S. history and the ongoing role that Asian Americans have played in shaping the nation’s story.

EPISODE ONE: BREAKING GROUND

In an era of exclusion and U.S. empire, new immigrants arrive from China, India, Japan, the Philippines and beyond. Barred by anti-Asian laws they become America’s first “undocumented immigrants,” yet they build railroads, dazzle on the silver screen, and take their fight for equality to the U.S. Supreme Court.

EPISODE TWO: A QUESTION OF LOYALTY

An American-born generation straddles their country of birth and their parents’ homelands in Japan and Korea. Those loyalties are tested during World War II, when families are imprisoned in detention camps, and brothers find themselves on opposite sides of the battle lines.

Presented by PBS & WETA

"ASIAN AMERICANS — EPISODES 3, 4 AND 5"

Continuing the epic five-episode TV documentary series!

EPISODE THREE: GOOD AMERICANS

During the Cold War years, Asian Americans are simultaneously heralded as a Model Minority, and targeted as the perpetual foreigner. It is also a time of bold ambition, as Asian Americans aspire for the first time to national political office and a coming culture-quake simmers beneath the surface.

EPISODE FOUR: GENERATION RISING

During a time of war and social tumult, a young generation fights for equality in the fields, on campuses and in the culture, and claim a new identity: Asian Americans. The war’s aftermath brings new immigrants and refugees who expand the population and the definition of Asian America.

EPISODE FOUR: BREAKING THROUGH

At the turn of the new millennium, the national conversation turns to immigration, race, and economic disparity.  As the U.S becomes more diverse, yet more divided, a new generation of Asian Americans tackle the question, how do we as a nation move forward together?

"THE HALF OF IT WATCH PARTY!"

With Alice Wu

Join us as we watch CAAMFest Online: Heritage at Home Spotlight Honoree, Alice Wu's new feature film on Netflix. In The Half of It (2020, dir. Alice Wu), shy, straight-A student Ellie Chu feels isolated and friendless in her remote, backwater town of Squahamish, where she makes some much-needed extra cash penning homework papers for her fellow high school students. Ellie reluctantly agrees to help the lovelorn school jock Paul Munsky write love letters to Aster Flores, the girl they both secretly love. As all three embark on an unexpected journey of discovery, they form a complicated triangle of friendship as they come to terms with their own unexpected feelings about love and find connection in the most unlikely of places.

After the film, we'll sit down and talk to Wu about her cinematic career. If you haven't seen Wu's previous film, Saving Face recently, this is your chance to relive that ground-breaking film.
