make that $54 million pants

Roy L. Pearson, the asshead jerk who was slapped a dry cleaners with a $67 million lawsuit over a pair of pants, is now instead asking for only $54 million, according to a May 30 court filing in D.C. Superior Court: OK, OK — just make it $54 million for the pants. As if that makes the suit any more reasonable, or easier on the owners of Custom Cleaners. Ridiculous. Pearson is now focusing his claims on signs in the shop that have since been removed, alleging that the Chungs committed fraud and misled consumers with signs that claimed "Satisfaction Guaranteed" and "Same Day Service." Christopher Manning of Manning & Sossamon, the law firm defending the Chungs, made the following statement in response to Pearson's recent actions:
"Although it is always encouraging to see claims withdrawn, it is simply baffling that Mr. Pearson continues to assert that he is entitled to tens of millions of dollars as a result of two completely harmless, completely straight-forward signs. Mr. Pearson's claims are not founded in common sense and are extraordinarily abusive towards the Chungs. As a result, the Chungs' terrible ordeal continues. The Chungs' decision to move to and build a business in America began with the classic American dream. Mr. Pearson has turned that dream into an American nightmare."
Okay, so not getting your pants back sucks. A little. And maybe as a customer you're idiotic enough to feel misled or dissatisfied because of these signs. You might be owed a little something for your trouble. But no judge in his right mind is going to award you even a fraction of $54 million for a frakkin' pair of pants. All Pearson is doing with this lawsuit is doing is making life miserable for the Chungs. To donate to their legal costs, or to send them a note of encouragement, visit Custom Cleaners Defense Fund

According to Manning & Sossamon, this case will be tried next week in courtroom 415 of the District of Columbia Superior Courthouse on June 12th and 13th, beginning at 9:30am each day. I don't know if people will be gathering to support the Chungs (given the press coverage this has gotten, I imagine the proceedings could be a little more interesting than your average lawsuit). And maybe you'll catch a glimpse of Evil Roy Pearson. Bring some eggs.
