controversy over oakland's koreatown

In Oakland, there's growing friction over the renaming of a neighborhood, the area between 20th and 35th streets along Telegraph Avenue, to what's now officially known as Koreatown -- "Koreatown-Northgate Community Benefit District," to be exact: Brouhaha over Oakland's 'Koreatown'.

While some believe the new designation has helped, cleaning up the area and providing security and advertising for the district, some residents and small businesses complain that the name doesn't truly reflect the diverse ethnic makeup of the neighborhood.

In fact, only 7 percent of the district's properties are owned by Korean-Americans, and most customers apparently aren't Korean either. So what gives? Some say the change was meant to appease a handful of wealth Korean business owners. More here: Neighbors Complain About New Oakland Koreatown.
