goodbye, stacy.

I wrote about Stacy Walker earlier this year. She was a young woman suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome and was desperately searching for a bone marrow match. With deep sadness, I'm passing along the news that Stacy passed away Friday morning with her family by her side.

After a long, hard-fought struggle with leukemia, her body became too weak for any more treatment, and she came home under hospice care to be with her family. Her brother Johnny tells me Stacy was an incredibly strong woman and after all that she went through, she never once complained about anything.

I never had the chance to meet Stacy, but based on our brief email exchanges, she seemed like a really cool person. It breaks my heart to hear about another life lost for lack of a marrow donor. Registering marrow donors is hard enough, but as a person of mixed heritage, finding a match for Stacy made it that much more challenging.

If you haven't registered to be a bone marrow donor (it's easy), and you'd like to learn more about what you can do to, visit the Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches website here. You could be the match that saves a life.
