call him 'mr. comptroller'

Just read this odd story in the New York Post about New York City's comproller, John C. Liu, who has apparently put some strict formalities in place for his new position: All rise for Liu, the prima donna!

According to sources, in new guidelines laid out of during a series of meetings last week, Liu's staff has been ordered to rise whenever he enters the room and to address him as "Mr. Comptroller." The new rules apply to everyone.

Though it's not a formal policy, staffers are generally complying with the practice. But according to the Post, the ultra-formal new behavior apparently has veteran denizens of the Municipal Building snickering behind his back.

You have to admit -- it has to be pretty weird for folks who have been working closely with Liu for a long time to suddenly have to address him as "Mr. Comptroller." Awkward. But if it makes the comptroller's office more professional, and doesn't get in the way of what's important -- getting crap done -- why the hell not?
