angry reader of the week: marian liu

Hey there. It is time for another Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is friend and journalist Marian Liu.

Who are you?
Marian Liu, journalist (@marianliu)

I cover arts and entertainment for The Seattle Times, in print, audio and video. In the past, I wrote for hip-hop magazine The Source, the San Jose Mercury News, the Los Angeles Times, Oakland Tribune and Detroit Free Press. Besides reporting, I am finishing up my Executive MBA, with an emphasis on branding, at the University of Washington. I direct a multimedia program for college and graduate students for the Asian American Journalists Association. I act as VP of external affairs for the Seattle chapter of the National Association of Asian American Professionals. I also serve on the journalism advisory board at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Washington.

What are you?
I am the first female in my family to have a career and the first to be born in this country. I am fierce, opinionated, independent, and have red hair.

Where are you?
I currently reside in Seattle, but grew up in the Bay Area. YAY AREA!

Where are you from?
I was born in Memphis (no kidding - my parents met there at an Asian American Students Association meeting. I am not making this up!) But I grew up in Fremont, California, the end of the Bart line. My dad is from Changsha, in Hunan, China, and my mom is from Taipei, Taiwan.

What do you do?
I report, write and document the news. I create paintings, jewelry and drawings. I snowboard, rock climb and do yoga. I also love eating, especially chocolate, boba, cupcakes, seafood, dim sum, sushi, and Korean barbeque.

What are you all about?
I am passionate about communicating the needs of the communities I represent: "young, Chinese, Asian, and female."

What makes you angry?
Racism, folks who think that being "Chinese" is the same as being "Taiwanese," people who have that nervous leg shaking tick, bad hair days, fleece vests, Crocs, mullets, cute heels that kill your feet and bugs.
