angry reader of the week: valerie soe

Hooray! Gather 'round, because it's time to meet another Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is Valerie Soe.

Who are you?
Valerie Soe.

What are you?
I'm an artist, filmmaker, professor, and blogger.

Where are you?
San Francisco, CA

Where are you from?
I was born & raised in the East Bay. I'm 4th generation Chinese American -- my dad grew up in the Berkeley flatlands and my mom is from Phoenix, AZ. My family is originally from Toisan.

What do you do?
I make experimental and documentary films, I teach Asian American Studies at San Francisco State, I raise my two daughters, and I write a blog, beyondasiaphilia.

The Oak Park Story, my latest movie that I produced and directed with Russell Jeung, is currently on the film festival circuit. It's about Cambodian and Latino tenants in Oakland who fought back against their exploitative landlord.

What are you all about?
I'm all about art, culture, identity, and activism, and how they intersect.

What makes you angry?
Ignorance, insensitivity, intolerance, and greed. Right now I'm really pissed about regressive immigration policies used to scare people into voting against their best interests (I'm talking to you, teabaggers!). Next week it will probably be processed food manufacturers.
