celebrate 10 years of yellow rage: an anniversary performance in support of fong lee

Spoken word duo Yellow Rage (aka Michelle Myers and Catzie Vilayphonh) are celebrating their tenth anniversary. In honor of this occasion, they're putting together a showcase of ten amazing guest artists to share poetry, song, movement and memories. It's happening Friday, November 19 at the Asian Arts Initiative in Philadelphia.

The show will also be a fundraiser for the family of Fong Lee, the Hmong teen who was murdered by Minneapolis police officer Jason Andersen. For more background, you can read Bao Phi's Star Tribune column on the case: Fong Lee: the human cost and the strength of his family. Proceeds from the show will help support the Lee family in their effort to demand justice for Fong. Here are some more details about the show:

At this special anniversary performance, the renowned spoken word duo invites a showcase of fellow artists to share poetry, song, movement, and memories celebrating 10 years of Yellow Rage! Join us for a not-to-be-missed event filled with more than enough creative talent and energy to inspire us for the next decade!

Michelle Myers and Catzie Vilayphonh met in the summer of 2000 in a writing and performance workshop at Asian Arts Initiative. Over the years, YELLOW RAGE has sought to make positive impact through their poetry. They have performed on HBO's Def Poetry Jam and at an incredible array of colleges and community venues. Drawing from their own unique experiences, individual political ideologies, and personal life philosophies as Asian American, Michelle and Catzie's poems address issues which explore the intersections of race, culture, gender, community, and self.

All proceeds from this performance will go to the Fong Lee family's fight for justice. Fong Lee was a Hmong teenager who was shot in the back 8 times and killed by a police officer in North Minneapolis.
Congratulations to Yellow Rage for ten years of kicking ass on the spoken word stage. For more information about the show, go to the Asian Arts Initiative website here.
