According the Mexican authorities, the teen -- identified only as "Gerardo N," confessed to killing Acejo, whose body was found with multiple stab wounds December 19 at his apartment in Tijuana's Rio Zone across the border from San Diego. The two were apparently in a relationship:
The suspect, identified as “Gerardo N,” because he is a minor, told investigators that he and Acejo struck up a friendship in September when the professor started coming into the restaurant where the teen worked and leaving large tips. The relationship eventually turned intimate, according to a statement from the Baja California Attorney General’s Office. The suspect will be tried in Baja California's juvenile justice system. If convicted, he'll face a maximum 10-year sentence. More here: Tijuana teen arrested in killing of San Diego professor.
On Dec. 18, the two went to Acejo’s two-bedroom apartment, the statement said. The two began arguing over “a sexual problem,” and Acejo kicked the teen, according to the statement. The teen then stabbed Acejo several times and ran out, the statement said.
The testimony of two other people who were in a different part of the apartment when the crime occurred were key to solving the case, investigators said.
