The School of Law at the University of California at Los Angeles is currently looking for a Director of the Critical Race Studies Program. The appointment is renewable on a year to year basis. The Critical Race Studies (“CRS”) Program includes both an academic specialization and a set of programmatic interventions dedicated to understanding the relationship between race and legal institutions. The CRS Program is offered for law students who are interested in advanced study in race and law, critical race theory, civil rights, public policy, and the intersection of race with other legal practice areas. The course of study -- as well as extracurricular symposia, lectures and activities -- emphasizes students' mastery of five areas: history, theory, comparative subordination, doctrine and practice. Students who successfully complete the Program requirements earn a certificate of program completion with their J.D.

The CRS Director is responsible for organizing a wide range of programs and projects for CRS students and faculty, including assisting in the development and implementation of new research and education programs; planning conferences and speaker series; providing support for CRS student recruitment, admissions and retention; working with students to promote intellectual development as well as career opportunities; and developing and enhancing links between the CRS Program and community organizations dedicated to racial justice, the civil rights bar and the broader legal community. The Director develops and monitors the budget; engages in fund-raising and coordinates fund-raising activities; supervises student administrative assistants; prepares all necessary reports; and assists in the selection of the CRS Teaching Fellows; and provides support for the Fellows' projects. The Director also teaches one CRS course every year, supervises independent study projects, promotes and supports student research and develops and promotes externships for CRS students. The Director will report to the Dean of Programs and Centers, the Faculty Director of the CRS Concentration and the CRS Administrative Committee.
