26-year-old Nai Mai Chao, a former nursing assistant at the Regency Pacific Nursing and Rehab Center in Gresham, was convicted of misdemeanor invasion of privacy for taking numerous photos of patients without their consent -- patients she was supposed to be helping instead of humiliating:
Chao, 26, was arrested in September after telling a colleague about the photo of a patient at the Regency Pacific Nursing and Rehab Center in Gresham. The image of an elderly man's naked buttocks as he moved his bowels in bed shocked and offended a co-worker, who recognized the patient by the bandages on his bedsores and reported Chao to supervisors.Chao was sentenced to two years of probation plus community service. In addition, she is prohibited from working with the elderly, children, or other vulnerable people. And on top of all that, she was ordered to avoid all social media. Congratulations! You are officially a rotten person, Ms. Chao.
During a two-day trial last month, a Multnomah County jury heard testimony that Chao, a worker at the nursing home since 2009, had been uploading mobile images from the nursing home to Facebook since April.
Jurors were shown a handful of photos including two that contained human feces and three that contained individuals who were not identifiable.
Chao, who denied snapping the photograph of the naked man, testified that she received it in a text message before posting it to a board she set up on her Facebook page and adding derogatory comments.
Jurors deliberated for half an hour before convicting Chao of misdemeanor invasion of privacy.
