on the bookshelf: the hunt by andrew fukuda

A couple of years ago, I wrote about Crossing, the haunting, impressive debut novel by Andrew Fukuda. Man, that book kicked my ass. The author is back with this next novel The Hunt, the first of a sci-fi/fantasy/thriller trilogy.

The Hunt has been described as sort of like The Hunger Games with vampires. I know, to some that might sound kind of groan-worthy -- I'm wary of anything touting itself as "the next" anything -- but it's been getting some decent reviews.

Here's the book trailer:

Slick. Here's the publisher's synopsis:
Gene is different from everyone else around him. He can't run with lightning speed, sunlight doesn't hurt him, and he doesn't have an unquenchable lust for blood. Gene is a human, aka a heper, and he knows the rules. Keep the truth a secret. It's the only way to stay alive in a world where humans are hunted. When he's chosen by lottery to hunt the last remaining humans, Gene's carefully constructed life begins to crumble. He's thrust into the path of a girl who makes him feel things he never thought possible—and into a ruthless pack of hunters whose suspicions are growing. Now that he has finally found something worth fighting for, his need to survive is stronger than ever—but will it come at the cost of his humanity?
I haven't had a chance to read it (to be honest, it's been sitting on my desk for a months), but considering how much I liked Andrew Fukuda's first book, I'm definitely aiming to carve out some time to crack open The Hunt.
