ted chiang's "story of your life" to be adapted into movie

Some movie news... Just read about an upcoming feature film in the works, Story of Your Life, based on the award-winning science fiction short story by noted author Ted Chiang: Shawn Levy-Produced 'Story of My Life' Finds Financing, Nic Mathieu Directing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nic Mathieu will direct the big screen science fiction flick, financed and produced by FilmNation and Lava Bear Films.

The script, adapted by Eric Heisserer, is described as a "mind-bending sci-fi thriller with a powerful emotional twist," and involves alien visitors and language translators and stuff:

Working with Heisserer, Story of Your Life was developed at 21 Laps by Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Dan Cohen.

The movie is described as a mind-bending sci-fi thriller with a powerful emotional twist. After aliens land around the globe, a linguist is recruited by the U.S. government in a race to decipher their intentions on Earth.

Producers are Levy, Levine and FilmNation's Aaron Ryder and Karen Lunder. Lava Bear's David Linde and Tory Metzger will executive producer alongside FilmNation's Glen Basner and Heisserer.
Sounds pretty cool. "Story of Your Life" was the winner of the 2000 Nebula Award for Best Novella. The story can be read in Ted Chiang's first collection of work, Stories of Your Life and Others.

For more on Ted Chiang, here's a recent interview he did a few months ago with the Asian American Writers' Workshop: The Occasional Writer: An Interview with Science Fiction Author Ted Chiang.
