Angry Reader of the Week: Kimberly Yam

"I'm foremost about spreading love. I mean that in the most embarrassingly basic way possible."

Hello, friends of the internet. It is time, once again, to meet the Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is Kimberly Yam.

Who are you?

Kimmy in life, Kimberly Yam in a byline, Kimmy The Pooh if you’re nasty.

What are you?

I'm a Chinese restaurant kid, introvert, lover of pretty words, devout Yankees fan, sentient 3 ft long ponytail.

Where are you?

In New York City, one of the cities where my parents' earliest experiences as Americans took place, aaaaaay.

Where are you from?

Upstate New York. The air is fresher and the trees have more soul. I’ll be back.

What do you do?

I report on Asian America. This is not the same thing as covering a story that happens to have an Asian person in it. We have issues we need to talk about and we are worthy of being the focus of the story. We can be the center, too, kids!

What are you all about?

I'm foremost about spreading love. I mean that in the most embarrassingly basic way possible. I want to see Asian America lift each other up. We can all get it. So let's all get it. Anyone who doesn't understand that is selfish.

What makes you angry?

I'm from working class Asian America. My parents do manual labor for a living, they don't have college degrees, they did everything in the hopes of helping the next generation. I hate how mainstream media ignores the concerns of immigrants like my parents. Did they not have their own vibrant hopes and dreams? They're not invisible. I always think about how, behind every immigrant family, is a documentary project waiting to be told. Our families have been to hell and back, their fantasies in the new world held close to their hearts. Mainstream media needs to do a way better job of understanding their plight. I hope I'm doing an OK job at changing that???
