Angry Reader of the Week: Sasie Sealy

"We'd all be better off if we just gave each other the benefit of the doubt."

Hey, everybody. It's that time again. Let us meet the Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is Sasie Sealy.

Who are you?

My name is Sasie. Pronounced SAY-SEE. Like Sadie with an "s." No T. (I spend a lot of time correcting people trying to say my name!)

What are you?

I generally say half-Chinese, half-Southern. My mom's from Hong Kong, and my dad's from South Carolina. If we wanna get specific -- Chinese, French, German, Scotch-Irish. I also identify as hapa. And these days, I call myself a New Yorker.

Where are you?

Sheltering-in-place in Brooklyn. Currently trying to promote a movie from my bedroom. And plotting an escape to the mountains, or somewhere with a swimming hole and PIE.

Where are you from?

Tricky question. I was born in Spartanburg, SC. Raised mostly in North Carolina. But there were a few formative years in there spent in Kaneohe, HI. Formative because 1) I was just hitting puberty and 2) all of a sudden, EVERYONE was hapa and Asian! I thought it was paradise. Then my parents moved back to North Carolina and I went back to being the only one. (hapa, that is)

What do you do?

I make movies. I also make commercials and sometimes TV, and sometimes I write scripts. I take photographs for fun. And I also try and read books and make jokes whenever possible. If I have a couple of glasses of wine, I might try and tell you I aspire to be an artist. Someday.

What are you all about?

Right now, I'm all about Fiona Apple's album Fetch the Bolt Cutters. I'm OBSESSED. Sometimes that happens with me -- I like to listen to things on repeat. Used to drive my college roommates crazy.

Also -- Dumplings! Hiking. Sancerre. Cheese. Sushi. Carolina BBQ. Biscuits. Travel. Movies that make me cry. Movies that make me laugh. The best are the ones that do both. Beauty. I'm a sucker for beauty and wish there was more of it in the world. Not to mention, a little more love and understanding. We'd all be better off if we just gave each other the benefit of the doubt.

What makes you angry?

Too many things. Trump. People who don't believe in science. People who always think they're right. What happened to Ahmaud Arbery. What's happening to our environment. People who complain, but then don’t vote!! The giant chasm between the rich and the poor, the lucky and the unlucky. I'm not really sure how you can be alive in 2020 and not be angry.

My mom is Buddhist and always telling me to not be angry. To be zen. But that's never going to happen, so I try and make my anger constructive. I try and use it to motivate myself to make change, to do what I can as a citizen and as a human being in the world. I mean, what else are you going to do? Can't just stand back and let the world piss you off!
