asian arts initiative presents the betrayal screening/discussion


The Asian Arts Initiative in Philadelphia presents a screening of Ellen Kuras and Thavisouk Phrasavath's Oscar-nominated documentary The Betrayal (Nerakhoon), this Friday, December 4 as part of its monthly IlluminAsian cinema series. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with community leaders. Here are some details:

WHO: Asian Arts Initiative in collaboration with P.O.V., PBS' award-winning nonfiction film series, and with Community Partners: Boat People SOS, Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia, Legacies of War, OCA- Greater Philadelphia, and Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Associations Coalition

WHAT: Free Screening of THE BETRAYAL (NERAKHOON), the Oscar-nominated film by ELLEN KURAS and THAVISOUK PHRASAVATH. Followed by a discussion moderated by CHANNAPHA KHAMVONGSA, Co-Founder and Executive Director of LEGACIES OF WAR, with NANCY NGUYEN of BOAT PEOPLE SOS and RORNG SORN of CAMBODIAN ASSOCIATION OF GREATER PHILADELPHIA.

Filmed over 23 years, Oscar-nominated documentary film THE BETRAYAL (2008) is the directorial debut of THAVISOUK PHRASAVATH. During the Vietnam War, the United States government waged its own secret war in the neighboring country of Laos. When the U.S. withdrew, thousands of Laotians who fought alongside American forces were left behind to face imprisonment or execution. One family, the Phrasavaths, made the courageous decision to escape to America. Hoping to find safety, they discovered a different kind of war.

This FREE event is part of Asian Arts Initiative’s lluminASIAN series, a cinematic exploration of the immigrant experience that spans the globe and digs deep into motherland soil.
